This will focus on Andol, File, Karama, and Nuri as they travel Lonagáin. Starting in the border town of Rudraige, Iarlugh, we will see them fight creatures, explore dungeons and explain common aspects of Lonagáin.
The start of this journey is in the Humble border town of Rudraige, so named for the first regent king Rudraige MacDela, on the edge of the Kingdom of Iarlugh. Our intrepid adventurers find themselves at Mas Chestnut a tavern inn that hosts the adventuring guild Drumlanders' board and liaisons.
File and Nuri went through their daily routine of sifting through available bounties and missions on the board. They shuffled through the usual easy tasks but low paying gigs to find the most efficient work to do in their off time. Then they went through the bounties.
Nuri asked of File the nature of a couple of bounties. "Hey what do you think of these? There's one for a rogue bullette, is that something we can handle?"
File thankfully was knowledgeable in a few things. "Probably not yet with the gear and experience we have, but looks like there's a band of goblins troubling the roads near the brú. That would certainly be in our wheel house."
"Ah yes, I was going to ask about that next. Bounty looks to be per head, and looks like they're lead by a bugbear named..." She squinted to read the name of their leader. "Mewg Flintbiter, sounds like a nasty bugger."
"Bugbear." File corrected. She grabbed the hard roll off her lunch plate and chucked it at Andol who was passed out next to Karama from their drinking the night before. "Get up you lazy gits, its time for work."
Andol rubbed his head where the roll hit. "I'm up, I'm up." He said groggily. "What's the work?" He patted Karama with the back of his hand to wake her. "Come on, little fox."
As Karama slowly came awake, Nuri explained the situation. "There is a band of goblins squatting in Brú na Rudraige and attacking travelers on the roads near it."
"Burial chambers of a king?!" Andol exclaimed with indignant surprise. "I'll get my sacred repentance stick." It was what he liked to call his greatclub. The band was off on yet another adventure.
As they traveled towards the brú they noticed two goblins, it was not fooling anyone as they feigned bickering to distract those their crew would ambush.
Border towns are towns and villages precariously close to the border of two nations. Many of these are dotted around the border of Iarlugh and Slania, but there are a couple on the border of Aoile and Catabar.
Why do these matter? Due to political relations, states rarely take open actions around these towns risking the provocations of their neighbors. Instead adventuring guilds hold a lot of power as they can field guards, scouts, and special operations agents in times of need.
The High Kings of the Slania Empire were chosen in a very ritualistic fashion. After the death of a king, the sages would gather the great treasures of Lonagáin to the Stone of Destiny in Falias. Leaders around Lonagáin would watch on hoping the norn summoned from the Endless Cauldron would grace them with the crown of Slania.
This was what made the position of High King so special. It was not a position of lineage, albeit many who were chosen were of noble birth, it was appointed by fate. The titles were life time appointments but it would sometimes takes years for the norn to choose the next high king, this would enact a regent king to take charge in their stead.
Regent Kings, much controversy comes from the reigns of regent kings. Not being chosen by the norns they tend to be more corruptible than the fabled high kings. The line of regent kings in Slania has lead to a significant decline in the empire's power and land holdings in recent years.
