Dawurld is full of unique and exciting creatures. Some dangerous, some fun, some that make no sense at all to the rational mind; these creatures populate Dawurld providing adventurers with many creatures to discover.
We will provide stat blocks and brief descriptions of each of the creatures here, so game masters can utilize them. Many are created from scratch, but some of them are interesting throwbacks or references to other creatures and things in popular media.
A dreaded myth comes from the mysterious dark continent. One of a creature so slow yet so unyielding that it is a creeping death omen for those that draw its ire. The Death Sloth is a creature rare that many will never see, but if one does, hope you kill it before it kills you.
Once the creature has your scent it will continue following you regardless of distance even floating across oceans to reach its target. Its claws are coated in a necrotizing poison. Oh and did I forget to mention its larger than most bears.
Dragon turtles have been known the ply the water around Keirunga. An ever present threat, a matriarch climbs upon the beaches every 1000 years to lay clutches of eggs upon the shores of dwarven homeland.
Lathyrus Drakou, the Drake Pea is a unique vegetable from around Dawurld. This strange plant, imbued with the magical energies of its environment has a mild sense of sentience, defending itself from would be predators of the slow growing plant.
Peas while still attached to the plant have two main mean of self defense. The first is a weak bite attack that typically takes care of small bugs that would land on the pods. The second is where the drake peas get their name; a breath weapon. They also have scaly vines and stems.
Drake Peas are very aggressive against would be predators and harvesters. They will slowly begin opening their pods to ready their attacks when small or larger creatures come within 30 feet of the plant, then release a devastating breath weapon to protect itself.
Drake Peas can vary by the environment they grow in. This grants each type of drake pea a different resistance and breath weapon. The only one that this doesn't seem to grant resistance to is the fire variety which also seems to be the most common version. Below are the different types and their favored environment:
Acid: Found in the swamp, this variety is resistant to acid and spews acid for its breath weapon.
Cold: Found in the frozen tundra or snowy peaks of mountains, this variety is resistant to cold and spews cold for its breath weapons.
Fire: Found on the plains or at the base of rocky mountains, this variety isn't resistant to anything, but it spews fire for its breath weapon.
Lightning: Found in deserts or the dusty wastelands, this variety is resistant to lightning and spews lightning for its breath weapon.
Poison: Found in forests, this variety is resistant to poison and spews poison for its breath weapon
Drake Peas can be domesticated, however they invariably become fire variety drake peas when grown in a wizards garden or their greenhouse. Some wizards have had luck with pocket dimensions that simulate their natural environments, but those still act in a very wild manner.
Domestic drake peas are more docile and easy to pick than their wild counter part, some wizards even let the vines grow up their towers as a natural defense against would be intruders. Most, though, use drake peas in potions as an elemental ingredient. Drake peas are a necessary ingredient for a potion of dragon's breath.
Calling the Majestic Frog Prairie home, the Giant Soil Toad can be found in small herds of 2-16 and are quite shy. They typically do not interact with civilization, but during mating season the females get quite aggressive hunting for food. There have also been stories of the unsuspecting traveler being attacked by giant centipedes only to be swallowed up from the ground by a giant soil-soul toad in a matter of wrong place wrong time.
These creatures were brought to Dawurld millennia ago by the gith on strange magic airships the technology to reach the stars has been lost to time, but the creatures remain. The gnomes call them giant space hamsters of which there are two known variants of the rodent; sylvan and standard. At this time there are no known diseases that affect these creatures.
The garden variety giant space hamster is domesticated and used in fairly similar fashion to oxen in the other nations. They are hardy and, according to the gnomes, quite delicious. Just like their smaller cousins, giant space hamsters are avid burrowers, regularly the fey of Schwachkopf have to fill in tunnels to prevent their infrastructure from collapsing.
If not careful, gnomes have been known to be captured up by the rodents and engulfed entirely. The hamsters store them in their cheeks, and though the saliva is no more than a sticky nuisance, the gnomes end up stuck for quite some time or until the hamster spots more enticing food.
This variety of hamster was bred for its climbing aptitude. They come in handing traversing the Spine of the world or use as heavy cavalry in the forest of Schwachkopf.
Hailing from the waters and volcanoes of Keirunga, the kaikau ahi is a dwarven delicacy. It is also a rite of passage for a dwarf to brave the depths of Keirunga Mountains, swimming the dark natural cisterns in search of the kaikau ahi fry that are born there.
As mentioned before kaikau ahi fry are born in the cisterns of Keirunga Mountains, and sometimes also in the fault line that borders the eastern coast. The sulfur pits in the cistern keep the fry safe while also allowing them to feed on small invertebrates that also call the pits home. It can take up to three years to be mature enough to survive the lava tubes and magma chambers they typically call home.
When they mature kaikau ahi move to lava tubes and chambers and only emerging to the waters above for hunting prey and laying eggs. Their diet also includes rare minerals found in the magma chambers they frequent. Frequently kaikau ahi can be found on the surface of lava flows and the basins of active volcanoes frolicking about.
Ancient kaikau ahi are incredibly rare these days. They once dwelt beneath the crushing depths of the sea in the planet's mantle, until a couple hundred thousand years ago when the volcanic rocks they called their habitat were forced to the surface forming Keirunga. The extreme pressure and heat under which the creatures thrived no longer supported their immense size like they did before, so they tend to be smaller on the whole.
These large peculiar birds come from the Swamps of Cliffbourg south of the Dedhurst Wood. Their oil glands secret a psychotropic secretion that protects them from predators. It has had the unfortunate drawback of criminal undergrounds harvesting them for drugs. They are skittish, but fiercely territorial of their nests.
