A fearsome black dragon took up residence hundreds of years ago in a forgotten temple. Legends tell of the ferocity are burned into the zeitgeist of Daleko’s history. The creature has been slumbering for centuries and people forgot.
This adventure involves the reawakening of the dragon Nilriath, an adult black dragon, and his legion of minions attacking the small town of Elming, in the world of Dawurld. It starts with characters saving the town, and ends with the characters finding his lair in Trog Stench Swamp.
Each of our heroes came from various towns and settlements from around Dawurld. Wherever they were from, they’ve found their way towards the town of Elming via the Majestic Frog Prairies. Cresting one of the hills they saw the town of Elming being raided by a plethora of reptilian creatures. Roofs were on fire puddles of acrid liquid dot the streets.
Swiftly they fought off the lizardfolk and kobolds overrunning the town. A draconic silhouette in the distance as they battled, the heroes cleared what resistance they found in the town.
As they finally made their way to the Alderman’s home the waves of raiding kobolds and lizardfolk ebbed away from the town. The Alderman, an aged figure with an exceptionally long beard came out to greet them. “Thank you, travelers. If not for your brave actions we would surely have met our end today.”
They discovered from the towns folk that a black dragon was spotted in the skies to the northwest, several days ago. Not long after that raiding parties of kobolds and lizard folk began attacking the town. Legends told of the black dragon named Nilriath that plagued the land hundreds of years ago and there was an old temple in Trog Stench Swamp. Most don't go into the swamp in fear of being attacked by troglodytes, but the temple ruines has been passed down by oral tradition over the years.
Gathering this information the heroes set out for the temple the next day.
The stench as they approached the swamp was unbearable; fetid water, decomposing foliage, and the rot of some animal that never seems too far away filled their nostrils. As they trudged through the peat bogs of Trog Stench Swamp, they learned full well how it got its name.
They discovered the old temple where the towns people said it would be, and as they entered the ancient temple of stone, they were greeted by stone reliefs melted beyond recognition and vaulted ceilings that echoed their booted steps. Outside and in there was a misty veil of lightly obscuring fog. As with the town the temple was guarded by lizardfolk and kobolds, and the party had to fight their way through the temple.
Stepping through the first tunnel they were greeted with a most heinous trap. Saw blades erupted from the wall and slashed at the unaware heroes. Only Yeehaw was spared the blade due to her short stature.
Pushing on they confronted the terrifying Hazirawn, a half-dragon born of Nilriath's brood. Being diplomatic Timofey and Yeehaw struck up a rapport with the fiendish warrior. He let them pass without harm as long as they took out his evil sire and freed him of the indignity of protecting the dragon's horde. Yeehaw also found love at first sight with the impressive reptilian promising to court the half dragon after her success against the legendary beast.
As they traveled downstairs the smooth pocked marked stone became rough cut, carved from the natural stone in the ground. The small landing at the base of the stairs had to its right a door, and to its left a musty old tapestry covering a hidden door. They found riches in this hidden room as well as a key and a hidden magical armor.
Exploring further they fought off trogs and drakes, found a fallen dwarf and his trusty shark toothed axe, and at the end...the dragon's horde. But lying in wait, the dragon emerged from beneath its gold and attacked the heroes. Valiantly the heroes fought against Nilriath, going back and forth against the beast of seemingly endless health. It felled poor Timofey and came close to taking out the others, but they brought it down. Unfortunate for them, they found a healing potion in the horde and had to mourn their fallen comrade. But thankfully, they had a horde of treasure to enrich themselves and the next towns they would be destined to visit.
